I didn't even know this was a thing, but it turns out there's a less-strenuous method of removing tree stumps than a shovel and a hatchet: Chemistry.
I bought a bottle of Stump-Out at Home Depot, as well as a 3/4" spade drill bit on a 16" shank.
I drilled several holes in six stumps throughout our backyard, poured in some Stump-Out, and then covered the Stump-Out with water.
The Stump-Out apparently dissolves the cellulose that makes wood so tough (supposedly without otherwise affecting the environment) and in 4-6 weeks you can just kick the stump apart, or simply let it biodegrade (rot) naturally.
With luck, next spring we won't have any stumps in our backyard!
