Second Childbirth Class

We had our second childbirth class last night, from 6pm to 9pm. This is back in the "regular series" so we had our first instructor again. This class focused on labor and delivery, with a special emphasis on epidurals and C-sections.

The rate of C-sections at Sky Ridge (the hospital where Brianna will be delivering) is worrying. The World Health Organization says developed countries should have C-section rates between 10 and 15 percent of all births. Sky Ridge's rate is 46% (jaw drop).

The instructor was kinda dismissive, saying a lot of those C-sections were due to parents who were "to posh to push" (her words). But having nearly half of the babies delivered via major surgery has to affect the mindset of the doctors and nurses at the hospital. We only want to go the C-section route if it's medically necessary, not so the doctor (and I'm going to be horribly uncharitable here, sorry in advance) can fit in a round of golf after delivering the baby early.

Anyway, it's good information to know ahead of time.

We also split into male and female groups for about 15 minutes, which was surprisingly fun. There were six couples last night, and one of them has a due date one day before ours - we joked that we'd have to say hi in the hallways :-)
