Reading Physical Books

I've been reading physical books recently, and I don't like it.

The books keep trying to close while I'm reading, there’s no built-in light, the ink lifts off onto my thumb and is subsequently smeared across the page (I don't dare read a paperback while working out at the gym – there would be no legible text left on the page!), the contrast on cheap paperbacks isn't much better than on a Kindle (and worse than on a smartphone or tablet), story immersion is limited to a single object (no syncing between “devices”), and I don’t carry books with me everywhere like I do my phone (well, not since I got my first smartphone, anyway).

And since the FAA lifted the ban on electronic devices during take off and landing, there really hasn't been a time when I couldn't read on an electronic device (the few times I've read in the tub, I just throw the Kindle inside a ziplock – works great).

I know  a lot of people love the experience of reading physical books. I used to be one of them. I always thought reading ebooks was more convenient, but I didn't realize I had transitioned to thinking ebooks were better until I went back to physical books.

I don't think I'll be buying many more physical books, unless maybe I want to show them off on my bookshelves. Anyway, rant over.

Autographed Books

Turns outs one of my favorite authors, Brandon Sanderson, was in town today and left some autographed books at a near-by Barnes and Noble. I stopped by after work and bought two. It was actually a bit of a struggle to not buy more :-/

Shattered, By Kevin Hearne

This was the seventh book in the series. It was stupid.

Books 1 through 6 were stupid.

...

Why isn't Book 8 out yet!?!?!?!

Bookcases!

I fell into temptation and bought a bookcase for full price (Thanks for the gift card, Uncle Bill!)

I also unpacked our books!

Notice I said "unpacked" not "organized" - that will come later.

Anyway, I'm pretty stoked to have my books unpacked again - it's been over six months! And I like having matching shelves, too!

Oh, one more thing - in keeping with a general theme of babyproofing, these bookshelves are anchored to the wall so they can't fall over - that's another first for me.

The Goblin Emperor

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It's a political thriller disguised as fantasy - although the character names were egregiously long and similar.

Harry Potter Fanfic

I stumbled across a new-to-me Harry Potter fanfic while reading through some Game of Thrones forums.

Poster from http://zerinity.deviantart.com/art/Methods-of-Rationality-259116881
It's called Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. It is unreserved propaganda for the concept of "Rationality" but for all that, it is one of the best fanfics I have read. Ever.

Anyway, that's how I spent most of my Saturday.

New "Dresden Files" Book was Released Today

I'm busy until further notice.

(Why the heck can't they release these before a three-day weekend?)
